Young Researchers' Abstracts 2016 : The Marcus Wallenberg
The vegetative cells of some bacteria may put them under a great deal of stress, especially in a certain environment wherein they are deprived of nutrients such as carbon and nitrogen. As a result, they produce inactive form-endospore. This is their coping mechanism for them to survive even in an unfavorable environment. Heat has been used extensively in the food industry as a preservation method, especially due to its ability to inactivate microorganisms present in foods. However, many aspects regarding the mechanisms of bacterial inactivation by heat and the factors affecting this process are still not fully understood.

Welch AB, Maxcy RB. Ground beef contains numerous microorganisms of various types. The commonly recognized bacteria are associated with current problems of spoilage. Irradiation, however, contributes a new factor through selective destruction of the microflora. When vegetative cells of certain bacteria such as Bacillus spp and Clostridium spp are subjected to environmental stresses such as nutrient deprivation, they produce metabolically inactive or dormant form-endospore.

They help the bacteria to endure the unfavorable environmental conditions. A bacteria, which cannot produce a spore and therefore, dies in its vegetative form under adverse environmental conditions, is a non-spore-forming bacteria (non-spore-former). The purpose of spore staining is to differentiate the spores and vegetative cells of a spore-former and to differentiate spore-formers from non-spore-formers. the vegetative cells should appear pink/red (i.e. the color of counterstain), the vegetative cells that contain endospores should stain pink while the spores should be seen as green ellipses within the cells. Mature, free endospores should not be associated with the vegetative bacteria and should be seen as green ellipses. Procedure of Commonly used test organisms include vegetative bacteria, mycobacteria, and spores of Bacillus species.
The purpose of this review is to offer a general overview of the most important aspects

In that same study, the vegetative culture supernatant from B. thuringiensis strain AB88 contained an 88.5-kDa protein that was highly toxic to A. ipsilon and other lepidopteran larvae, which was named Vip3Aa. More recently, Vip4Aa was reported (NCBI GenBank accession number AEB52299).

endospore [en´do-spor] 1. a thick-walled body formed within the vegetative cells of certain bacteria (e.g., Bacillus, Clostridium, Sarcina) that can withstand adverse environmental conditions for prolonged periods; under favorable conditions it will germinate to form a vegetative bacterium. 2. an asexual fungal spore produced within the hyphae or cell @article{osti_4182411, title = {Characterization of radiation-resistant vegetative bacteria in beef}, author = {Welch, A B and Maxcy, R B}, abstractNote = {Ground beef contains numerous microorganisms of various types. Common vegetative reproduction in bacteria is by (a) conjugation (b) budding (c) oidia (d) binary fission. Answer: (d) 4. Transfer of genetic material in bacteria through virus is termed as (a) transduction (b) recombination (c) conjugation (d) transformation. Answer: (a) 5. Genetic recombination between bacterial cells is first demonstrated by B. Heymann, in Reference Module in Food Science, 2016 Bacteria Removal. Spore-forming bacteria include Bacillus (aerobic) and Clostridium (anaerobic) species. The spores of these species are dormant bodies that carry all the genetic material as is found in the vegetative form, but do not have an active metabolism.
